Mastering the self-tape
The self-tape is how most casting work now begins. A frame, a reader, and a window of a few hours to show what you can do — often with no one else in the room. That is a craft of its own, and it is one most actors are expected to pick up alone.
The difference between a tape that gets you in the room and one that gets passed over is rarely talent. It is preparation: a scene that has been read against another voice, choices that have been tested, a setup that flatters the work, and feedback from people who sit on the other side of the casting table.
Self Tape Lab brings all of that into one place. Here is how each part works — and what it does for you.
Scene-partner reads
- 01Find a reader in the Partners directory by accent, age range and availability.
- 02Send a booking with your sides, focus notes and a time that suits you both.
- 03Jump into the live room and run the scene together in real time.
Put your work in front of another actor before the tape, so the choices are alive and the read is a conversation — not a solo guess.
Coaching sessions
- 01Browse coaches by specialism — acting, accent and dialect.
- 02Book a one-to-one and share your audition material in advance.
- 03Meet live, get direction, and keep the notes and files in your shared folder.
Sharpen the performance and the setup with a coach who has seen the rooms you are walking into.
Rehearsal rooms
- 01Open a room from the Studio or Today page, or join one already live.
- 02Share the sides and run lines with a partner — no recording, no pressure.
- 03Close the room when the reps are done.
A low-stakes space to find the scene before it counts, with a reader on call whenever you need one.
Live workshops
- 01Sign up to a session hosted by a casting director or industry pro.
- 02For self-tape workshops, tape the set script by the deadline and submit it.
- 03Receive structured feedback on performance and setup, plus a live Q&A.
Learn what the people casting you are actually looking for — and hear it from them directly.
In-person self tapes
- 01Filter readers and coaches who offer in-person taping by distance from you.
- 02Book a session at their space, or have them travel to you.
- 03The full address is shared only once your booking is confirmed.
A proper setup, lighting and reader in the room when your home rig will not do the job justice.
Recorded courses
- 01Enrol on a course from the Studio and watch at your own pace.
- 02Work through each lesson and revisit them whenever you need.
- 03Leave a rating to help other members find the best material.
Build the craft and the technical know-how on your schedule, between auditions.
